Skirmish commands were given by the bugler as directed by the Regiment or Brigade commander. The bugler was used to amplify the voice of command over great distances. A prelude call was given to identify which unit the command was about to be given for. Then the acutal command was sounded. Below are skirmish calls that a soldier would have had to be familier with.
